Course Guides AUSTRAC e-learning

Is AUSTRAC’s e-learning enough to train your staff?

AUSTRAC’s modules are self-paced and useful, and AUSTRAC says they can form part of your training. It also says they cannot be relied on solely, because your training must fit each person’s role. You still need a plan, a register and your own procedures taught.

Sources for this answer
  • AUSTRAC says its own e-learning modules "can be used as part of your AML/CTF training but can’t be relied on solely to meet your training obligations". [S1]
  • AUSTRAC on its e-learning page: "The modules do not replace your AML/CTF risk awareness training but can be used as a resource to contribute to fulfilling this requirement." [S4]
  • AUSTRAC describes its e-learning modules as self-paced and says it is progressively publishing new modules to reflect the changes to the Act that came into effect on 31 March 2026. [S4]

What the modules leave to you

Your training must fit the person’s function, the risks of that function and their responsibilities under your own policies. A general module cannot know your program, your procedures or who reports to whom.

Facts and sources for this part
  • The rule on how training is tailored (AML/CTF Rules 2025, section 5-9(3)): "The AML/CTF policies of the reporting entity must require that the training provided to a person: (a) is appropriate having regard to: (i) the particular function performed by the person; and (ii) the particular risks of money laundering, financing of terrorism and proliferation financing that are relevant to the person’s function; and (iii) the particular responsibilities of the person under the AML/CTF policies; and (b) is readily understandable by the person." What AUSTRAC expects you to add

  • A training plan that schedules role-based training.
  • A register of completion dates and when more training is due.
  • Records that show you trained people.
  • Some way of checking understanding, such as a test.

Where this course fits

This course gives a role-based track, a test with explanations and a certificate for each person, and a register for firms. It does not replace your program, and it does not replace training on your own procedures. Many businesses will use it alongside AUSTRAC’s modules.

Facts and sources for this part
  • AUSTRAC: "Avoid relying on generic training not specific to your industry without first assessing if it’s appropriate for your business and adapt it as needed." [S1]
  • AUSTRAC: you may outsource training, "However, you remain responsible for making sure training is tailored, appropriate and understandable to your personnel." [S1]
