English test scores for Australian visa points.

On the points test, Competent English gives 0 points, Proficient English 10 and Superior English 20123. Questions people ask?

Do all four scores have to reach the level?

Yes. Every table sets a minimum "in each of the 4 test components"4. Three skills at Superior and one at Proficient is Proficient English, so the calculator also shows exactly which skill to lift for the next level.

How many points does each level give?

Competent English gives 0 points, Proficient English 10 and Superior English 20, on the points tables for subclasses 189, 190 and 491123. Competent still matters: it is the minimum you need at the time of invitation789.

Can I use an at-home online test?

No. The department does not accept tests delivered completely online10, such as IELTS Online, OET@Home or TOEFL iBT Home Edition10. The test must take place in a secure testing centre10.

My test was before 7 August 2025. Does it still count?

It can. The approved tests changed on 7 August 202510, and results from a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 may be used until 6 August 2028, inclusive, depending on the visa10. Choose "on or before" in the calculator and it uses the older table, which covers C1 Advanced, IELTS, PTE Academic, OET and TOEFL iBT10.

Why does MET stop at Proficient English?

The legal instrument leaves the Michigan English Test out of Superior English11, and the department's Superior table has no MET row. So MET can give at most 10 points123.

I'm a nurse with OET scores. Is anything different?

OET is developed for health professionals, and since 7 August 2025 it is scored in numbers, not letters4. The calculator handles both. If you're also heading for the registered nurse OSCE, our free OSCE practice check is there when you want it.

Is this tool run by the government?

No. It's an independent tool that reads the department's pages and the legal instrument, using our stored copies. Rules change10, so confirm on the department's English language page before you rely on a result: immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/help-support/meeting-our-requirements/english-language.

How this tool is built

  • Every number is read straight out of our stored copy of the official page, never typed by hand.
  • Each copy is dated and fingerprinted, and our tests fail if a number no longer matches it.
  • We compare the department's tables with the legal instrument row by row and show you where they differ.
